Review: 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' better than the original. Walking into the theater for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," my expectations were high. Luckily, I left t feeling as if they were fulfilled. I, like so many other teens, couldn't wait to see the movie and sacrificed homework and sleep to see a late- night Thursday showing.

I was nervous that since "Catching Fire" had a different director than the previous film, it wouldn't follow as closely to the book as the first movie. Fortunately, I recognized direct quotes from the book being frequently used, most noticeably in the scene where the heroine Katniss has her first threatening conversation with the oppressive ruler of Panem, President Snow. Once again, my admiration for Jennifer Lawrence continues to grow. How can this woman, who is so delightfully quirky and funny on the red carpet, transform herself into the tormented and reluctant leader Katniss Everdeen? I am amazed by her acting, as she once again proves herself to be the "girl on fire" with her heartfelt and sincere performance.

Lawrence takes Katniss from a scared, reluctant girl who doesn't want to go to war in the beginning of the movie, to a determined, violent warrior who wants revenge for the people in her district. While some fans get caught up in the trivial "Team Peeta" or "Team Gale" games, "Catching Fire" proves that this story is not a love triangle, but a rebellion, and the dangers of not fighting for what's right. The fan support for Katniss, who is a rare find in an industry full of weak female characters, is evident as almost every girl in the theater (including myself) wore a side braid and donned a Mockingjay pin.
Visually, "Catching Fire" is wildly impressive. When the tributes enter the arena for the second time, gasps were heard in the audience as giant waves came crashing down, and the entire arena took a 1. The digital monkeys that nearly ended Katniss' existence were lifelike enough that I was genuinely scared. Most impressively, the movie was so suspenseful and well done that I was sitting on the edge of my seat, even though I knew exactly how it was going to end because I have read the book several times. Some die- hard fans may be disappointed that "Catching Fire" wavers slightly from the books. For example, many "Peeta" fans might be upset that the movie did not include Peeta's leg amputation.
Also the movie transitioned fast, often not taking a second to pause before launching into the next scene. In one of the most pivotal moments of the movie, Peeta announces Katniss is pregnant (not true, just a ruse to fuel the rebellion against the games). Everyone in the audience clapped and cheered as it felt like such a defiant moment. Yet, the pregnancy was never mentioned again. It was simply forgotten as soon as it was said. However, what small things "Catching Fire" lacks is quickly made up for with the action packed 2 and a half hours. As soon as the credits rolled, I immediately looked up when the third installment would be released.
I'm already counting down the days to Nov. Alexandra Quilici, Carondelet High School. Girl on fire Fan frenzy for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" has moved into overdrive especially among die- hard teens like me.
Wearing my Mockingjay pin while waiting several hours in line for the first IMAX showing on the eve of the official theater release, I saw several other teenage devotees in the spirit, one wearing a Katniss Everdeen arena costume and another group of girls in flaming socks. Although I was excited, I also felt a bit of melancholy. This year has been filled with anticipation surrounding this sequel. Would it live up to the hype? Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) and Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE. Photo credit: Murray Close/Lionsgate. As the film begins, our heroine Katniss, aka "the girl on fire" is suffering from post- traumatic stress brought on by the 7.
Hunger Games and is dreading the upcoming "Victory Tour." The malicious President Snow is determined to undermine any attempt by the victors to create a better world for themselves and their families, a revolution of sorts. What then follows is a tour that plays out as to honor the fallen tributes and ends in more turmoil for Katniss and Peeta along the way. There are many unintended consequences as our friends from district 1. This is well illustrated through a veiled message seen in passing as the group tours on a high speed futuristic train; it reads "the odds are never in our favor." This text caught my attention, as the first movie repeatedly referred to the phrase "may the odds be EVER in your favor." An underlying theme of hope begins to emerge even as the rules for the 7. Referred to as the Third Quarter Quell, President Snow directs that 2. Katniss and Peeta are once again faced with the struggle to survive in this manufactured battle ground.
Once the chosen victors are in the arena, I felt as if I were in the game- maker generated atmosphere with them. Extreme measures of torture are endured and unbelievable obstacles are placed in their path. Some of the other tributes/victors, most much older than those in the 7.
Notably, I'd like to give a shout out to tribute Johanna Mason, as she provides a new level of humor by "dissing" the Capitol in ways that the girl on fire did not. Though certain details were left out, the presence of unique wit more than makes up for any missing plot specifics. Finally, the last five words of the film, will leave you stunned. Brandon Garnsey, San Ramon Valley High School.
Sequel is even more fiery"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" did not disappoint and even surpassed the first movie in terms of its storyline, acting, and overall direction. The film continues where the previous one left off, where Katniss Everdeen (played by a marvelous Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (played by Josh Hutcherson), victors of the 7. Hunger Games, are about to embark on their Victory Tour to all the districts.
Katniss, already under the tight watch of President Snow and the Capitol, must face her enemies to protect her family; all while juggling her act of romance with Peeta, uneasy relationship with her childhood friend Gale, and symbolizing hope for the people. To top it all it all off, President Snow announces the 7. Hunger Games (The Third Quarter Quell) features an interesting twist - - all tributes from each district must be previous victors. This throws Katniss and Peeta back into the Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence breathes life into this complex character that really connects with the audience.
She authentically depicts the internal struggles that Katniss is going through. In fact, the struggles of everyone are built on in the sequel.
Catching Fire" is definitely a heightened version of its predecessor. The movie explores and delves deeper into the emotional difficulties that were triggered in the first movie. From Katniss' wedding dress that transforms into bird's wings to the shining white teeth of Caesar, every aspect of "Catching Fire" seems bigger and better. From an artistic perspective, the set design makes the film even more interesting to watch. The film elicited many emotions. Sure, everyone tears up when their favorite tribute dies, but the raw emotion in the eyes of the oppressed people really puts you right there with them.
But as always, Elizabeth Banks' portrayal of the eccentric Effie Trinket is the perfect comic relief. Although sometimes out of place in more somber scenes, Effie's crazy pink hair styles and foot long eyelashes are still nice to laugh at. The only flaw lies in the film's ending. Yes, we prefer short and sweet, but that was too short, and not really that sweet. The audience is left with many questions that are hurriedly and sloppily answered in the last five minutes. If you haven't read the book, a little more explanation would have been nice. Despite that, you'll leave the theater satisfied.
Not only is "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" a great movie, it also serves as quality entertainment for all "hungry" teens. Ankita Bhanot, Presentation High School.
